Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign Nathan Bishop.

That’s according to The Northern Echo, who have reported that the Black Cats have agreed the framework of a permanent switch for the goalkeeper.

Bishop joined Manchester United from Southend in 2020 and has regularly featured for the U-21 side. However, he looks a distance away from forcing his way into the first team set-up.

Despite that, David de Gea’s exit has left United short on goalkeepers and Bishop has remained in the squad as cover during their pre-season tour of the United States.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are desperate to bring in a new shot-stopper to offer Anthony Patterson some competition following the departure of Alex Bass.

The Black Cats are currently relying on 16-year-old Matty Young to rotate with Patterson during their own pre-season schedule.

Tony Mowbray’s side now look to be very close to securing a deal for Bishop, though the report claims he won’t be going anywhere until the Red Devils return from the US.

Manchester United’s final game takes place against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, meaning Bishop should be allowed to complete his move to Wearside next week.

It will be a relief to see Sunderland sign another promising goalkeeper in Nathan Bishop

Other than Anthony Patterson, Sunderland have long been stuck with very low quality, older goalkeepers that are nowhere near challenging for the number one spot.

Alex Bass was always an unusual signing, while Lee Burge never really impressed before he joined Northampton Town either – with his move League Two pretty much speaking for itself.

However, Sunderland could now have another gem on their hands.

While Bishop never got a chance under Erik ten Hag, Bruno Fernandes was an unlikely fan of his. Following his new contract in January 2021, the midfielder responded: ‘Well deserved kid! Top lad and amazing professional’.

Hopefully the 23-year-old can live up to the hype from his teammates and can push Patterson to be even better himself.
