Sunderland are closing in on their second signing of the summer.
It has been three weeks since Sunderland confirmed the arrival of Simon Moore on a free transfer and it has been all about new head coach Regis Le Bris since then.
However, they are now looking to get on track with some important transfers and have made an experienced midfielder one of their main priorities.
It had previously looked like they would snap up Oliver Norwood, who has just been released by Sheffield United.
However, the Black Cats cooled their interest when they learned of Alan Browne’s eagerness to move to Wearside.
It was reported earlier this week that the 29-year-old was scheduled for a medical at Sunderland after deciding to reject a new contract at Preston North End.

Alan Browne addresses ‘special’ Preston North End
The move now looks to be almost done, with Browne taking to social media to say goodbye to the Lilywhites.
He wrote: “I’ve rewritten this message 100 times and still don’t know exactly what to say.
“The best 10 years of my life. Through the highs and lows I’ve given my all for the club and the club has given me more than I could ever have wished for.
“I am so thankful to the late Mr. Hemmings and Peter for bringing me to the club all those years ago, who I have so much respect and admiration for.
“I have been fortunate enough to work with some special people within the club.
“Some incredible managers and amazing staff and wish them nothing but happiness and success.
“I’ve had unbelievable dressing rooms from day 1 and made friends for life. It’s been a privilege to pull on that white shirt year after year.
“Sadly, all good things must come to an end, but you never do process it until the day comes.
“I understand some of the frustration on the matter and chose not to comment out of respect for the club.
“I can’t thank the club or fans enough for all you have done for me and my family, but just know Preston North End has and always will mean the world to me.”
The Black Cats still need a defensive midfielder
Browne is set to join Sunderland on a free transfer after ten years at Deepdale.
The midfielder is highly-regarded at Preston and it is believed to be a very good signing for the Black Cats.
However, Browne isn’t a defensive midfielder and will add more of an attacking outlet if anything.
While he will be a good addition to the team, there is no denying that Sunderland need more of a no.6, as Dan Neil and Pierre Ekwah were so often forced to play there last season and it just isn’t their favoured position.
It will be interesting to see if we do get another midfielder though, as we will have multiple players all vying for three positions. It adds great competition but could also make the likes of Ekwah, Rigg and Jobe frustrated if they are left out.
