Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has given his thoughts on one area they may improve on in the January window.

The Black Cats will likely be looking to bolster their options in the January transfer window, something that looks to be a necessary task for Kristjaan Speakman and Regis Le Bris due to the lack of squad depth in key areas.

For example, the wide areas for Sunderland are very limited at this moment in time due to the injuries sustained by Romaine Mundle, who looks set to be out until January, whilst Tommy Watson will continue his spell on the sidelines for a number of weeks.

The midfield has also been down to barebones at moments, however it is set to be bolstered in due course by Salis Abdul Samed’s return, who looks set to be back from injury at the end of December.

One further area that Sunderland are certainly lacking in reinforcements is at striker, and the French boss has since been questioned on whether the Black Cats will navigate that route in the January transfer window.

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris gives thoughts on potential striker signing plans

The current striker options include Wilson Isidor, whose goals have propelled the side up the league, although he has appeared quite streaky in recent weeks, whilst Eliezer Mayenda and Aaron Connolly are also available to be utilised.

However, Le Bris has not hidden the fact that he would like extra players in that area, however, there is a catch.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash this weekend with Norwich City, he said: “Yes, probably we’ll pay specific attention to one or two players who can help [at striker]. But it’s not an easy task because the group is strong, with many young players.

“It’s not just one player, it’s a player who has to fit with the project and the dynamic of the team.”

Many Sunderland fans have also made it clear that an attacker or two should come through the Stadium of Light doors in January.

Kristjaan Speakman must improve glaring error of concern before striker

There is no doubt that Le Bris is going down the correct lines to suggest that a striker could help his side out this season, especially in regards to proving the necessary depth needed, however, there is one other area that must be prioritised this summer.

Sunderland’s current depth issues lie in the wide areas, which is down to the current absences of Watson and Mundle, and there is no doubt that this position should be targeted.

The Black Cats have been linked to the likes of Louie Barry, who is currently fashioning his trade in League One with Stockport County. He would be the perfect candidate to help Sunderland this season in regards to depth, whilst also offering a proven goalscoring threat.
