Sunderland will find out if they have won the race to sign Tom Cannon today.

That’s according to Alan Nixon, who has reported that Everton will now make a decision on the striker’s future.

Cannon netted eight goals whilst on loan at Preston North End for the second half of last season and has since attracted plenty of interest from the Championship, with Sunderland a potential suitor.

The Black Cats are desperate to bolster their attack as Ross Stewart remains out until the end of September and have considered both a loan and a permanent deal for the ‘outstanding’ forward.

However, Sunderland face a lot of competition for his signature and previous reports have claimed Preston are currently favourites to re-sign him, with a few clubs put off by his £1 million loan fee.

Everton were expected to make a decision on where he would be playing his football this season last week, however they decided to delay it until they had brought in their own new attackers in Jack Harrison and Youssef Chermiti.

It seems unlikely that Sunderland will be the club to win the race for Cannon, however fans will be keen to see him join given the success of former Everton loanee, Ellis Simms.

Sunderland would receive a huge boost if they could sign Tom Cannon and Nazariy Rusyn

The news that Everton are set to make a decision on Tom Cannon’s future comes just days after reports emerged that Sunderland had launched another bid to sign Nazariy Rusyn.

Both bare very different experiences in football, with Cannon making his debut in senior football this year, while Rusyn has over 100 appearances and has previously featured and scored in the Europa League.

To land both strikers would be brilliant news for Sunderland and could completely change the path of a disappointing start to the campaign.

However, the club may instead look elsewhere if they just secure Rusyn, with a proven Championship striker yet to be pinpointed.
