Could Sunderland make a move for 21-year-old who was on fire last season, as he nears full fitness

Amad Diallo was an instant favourite for the Stadium of Light fans last season during his season long loan from Manchester United.

The 21-year-old Ivorian enjoyed a hugely successful season under Tony Mowbray at Sunderland. For the Black Cats he scored 14 goals in 39 Championship games. This return was key in helping the Wearside outfit reach the playoffs.

Amad Diallo endeared himself to the fans here in his few months at the club, earning his own chant. His form and results which he helped inspire led to calls for his loan to be extended, which ultimately didn’t transpire as he returned to Old Trafford.

Amad recovering from injury

Soon after his return to his parent club, Amad started pre-season where he was impressing as calls for him to get additional game-time came from United fans. While rumours swirled that a return to Sunderland wasn’t impossible.

However during his tour of America, Amad picked up a knee injury and has been out since. But he is now expected to return after the upcoming international break.

But with little time played and the likelihood of taking a place from either Antony or Facundo Pellistri at United, a winter loan could be his best option.

Should Sunderland move for a loan

It’s no secret that Amad enjoyed his time up north, and with interest from all three relegated sides it is thought Amad would favour a return to the Stadium of Light, if a loan move was to happen.

But do Sunderland need him?

Mowbray has made a team which is far better than the one he had last season, which calls for much less individual heroics. However no way he turns down the opportunity to take Amad back.
