Zan Vipotnik has explained why he chose to join Bordeaux over Sunderland this summer.

Speaking to the club following his arrival on Thursday, Zipotnik claimed that he believed that a move to France was ‘the best choice’ for him.

The 21-year-old joins Bordeaux from Maribor for £2.4 million after netting an impressive 20 goals in only 30 matches in Slovenia last season.

L’Equipe had recently reported that Sunderland had expressed an interest in signing the young striker, while Football Scotland revealed Celtic were also chasing Vipotnik.

However, both teams will be left disappointed after the Slovenian instead chose to move to Ligue 1 this week.

“We considered all the factors to decide how to proceed. And when the offers came in, we got together and realised Bordeaux was the best choice,” Vipotnik said.

“We all know it’s a club with a rich tradition. One of the most successful in France. I am delighted to join the team.”

Vipotnik will replace Josh Maja at the club, with the former Sunderland striker now available on a free transfer.

Sunderland should target someone more experienced than Zan Vipotnik

Sunderland have enjoyed bringing in young talent from abroad recently, welcoming Jenson Seelt, Nectarios Triantis and Luis Semedo already this summer.

While the Black Cats clearly have an eye for foreign quality, at some point they need to consider looking into more experienced players within the English football pyramid.

We already have the likes of Semedo, Jewison Bennette and Isaac Lihadji among our attack, so why not bring in someone who has already proven themselves in the Championship?

Sunderland can’t afford to rely on Ross Stewart for goals this season, especially when he won’t be fit for the opening day clash with Ipswich Town.
