Rabbi Matondo was once signed for close to £10million. Now, he’s struggling to see through a move to Coventry City in the Championship. But this could all be good news for Sunderland.
Rabbi Matondo came through the ranks at Manchester City, getting his break in Germany with Schalke who paid close to £10million to sign the Welsh international from City back in 2019.
He’s since had differing fortunes with mixed loan spells in England and Europe before a 2022 move to Rangers. But the 24-year-old is now unfavoured at Ibrox.
Rangers have told Matondo he’s free to leave the club during this January transfer window. Sunderland are keen on Matondo but they’re not alone in their interest, with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday linked.
But Frank Lampard’s Coventry City have come out of nowhere in this transfer race. It looked like they were going to seal the deal before reports on Wednesday night revealed that Matondo’s move to Coventry City was stalling, because of differences over bonus payments and add-ons.

Rabbi Matondo’s move to Coventry City ‘in doubt’
Now, Matondo’s move to Coventry City has taken another hit. Journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed on X that the move is ‘in doubt’ because Rangers and Coventry City can’t come to agreement over the terms of the deal, specifically the bonus payments.
So Matondo’s move to Coventry has gone from being ‘stalled’ to being ‘in doubt’. The move is on downwards trajectory right now and it’ll surely alert the likes of Sunderland who’ve been linked with Matondo, though whether they come in and make a move remains to be seen.
Sunderland have signed Enzo Le Fee on loan from Roma during this January transfer window, with more signings expected before the February 3rd deadline.
Sunderland may be preoccupied by another transfer story right now
New signings certainly look set to happen at the Stadium of Light in the final two weeks of the January transfer window.
But club officials may be focussed on the emerging Dan Neil transfer rumours with Everton and West Ham reportedly keen on signing the Sunderland skipper before deadline day.
Losing him would be a huge blow. But with Neil out of contract in 2026, it might be a move that the Black Cats consider, as Neil would be entering the final year of his contract come the summer.
Either way, with Neil linked with a move away and Matondo linked with a move to Wearside, transfer matters at Sunderland are heating up.
