Sunderland summer transfer target Alexandre Mendy has struggled to recover since his failed move to the Stadium of Light in August.

The Black Cats had a busy summer. Alongside the appointment of Regis Le Bris, the new incoming Sunderland manager brought in plenty of fresh faces into the squad.

Stars such as Chris Mepham and Alan Browne made their way up north which has helped to contribute to Sunderland’s sensational start to their Championship campaign.

However, one star who dominated the final weeks of the August transfer window for Sunderland was Alexandre Mendy.

Now, after the dust has settled, the striker has opened up about his failed move to the Stadium of Light.

Alexandre Mendy ‘had his bags packs’ for Sunderland transfer

The Caen striker, who finished as the Ligue 2 top scorer in the 2023/24 campaign, boasted an impressive record in France.

As a result, Sunderland were in hot pursuit of Mendy, with the Black Cats holding a belief that the Guinea-Bissauian international could solve their goalscoring issues.

However, despite the registered interest, Mendy’s transfer to Sunderland collapsed in the final days of the window.

Now, looking back on the failed move, the striker still believes that there are some ‘after-effects’.

“100% recovered? No, despite everything, there are some after-effects,” Mendy admitted. “After-effects of what happened in the past, and also everything tied to my family and the packed boxes from this summer.”

“The furniture is reassembled, but the boxes are not yet unpacked,” he joked. “There are a lot of boxes to go through, but right now we’re concentrating on football. When there’s a break, we’ll unpack everything.”

Sunderland missing out on Alexandre Mendy may be for the best

As good as Mendy is, it may have been for the better that Sunderland missed out on the prolific striker.

Throughout August, Mendy made it no secret that he wanted to join the Black Cats, and this has only been reinforced by his recent comments

This could be seen as highly disrespectful to Caen, and if he did join Sunderland, he could have performed similar antics.

Given the Black Cats’ incredible start to the Championship campaign, it is clear that Mendy was unneeded, and perhaps this was for the better.
