Sunderland fans have very few fond memories of Michael Beale’s tenure at the club, if any at all. But he’s been proved right about something he said of the playing squad.
Michael Beale goes down as one of the most unpopular and unsuccessful Sunderland managers in history.
The former QPR and Rangers boss replaced the well-liked Tony Mowbray in December 2023 but would last until just February, being sacked after 12 games in charge.
Of those 12, Beale won four, marking the worst win rate of any Sunderland manager since Chris Coleman’s nightmare tenure that ended in 2018.
Beale showed glimpses of a good coach at QPR, even at Rangers too. But Beale annoyed Sunderland fans with comments he made in the media, condemning himself to failure early on at the Stadium of Light.
But something he said about the first-team squad back in March is now very interesting.

Michael Beale’s comments on Sunderland lack of experience
A month after Sunderland sacked Beale, the 44-year-old appeared on Sky Sports, and discussed his spell on Wearside.
Beale made an interesting point that many agreed with at the time, stating that the Sunderland squad desperately lacked Championship experience.
Beale said of the Sunderland team: “The big thing with the Sunderland squad now is it’s very talented and technical, but needs a little bit more experience within the team to get over the line.
“Even in the games since I’ve left and Mike Dodds has taken the team, the results have not probably been what they’ve deserved from the performances, and it’s a little bit of nouse and experience that could probably help the group.”
The Black Cats went on to finish in 16th place of the Championship table last season.

Who has 100+ appearances for Sunderland?
It was clear that in the summer that Sunderland needed experience, and some Championship experience too. And they brought just that with the free signing of Alan Browne who has more than 350 Championship appearances to his name.
Interestingly though, Sunderland’s players who maybe lacked a bit of experience, and Championship expertise last season now have another full season under their belts; Anthony Patterson, Dan Neil, Dan Ballard, Trai Hume, Jobe Bellingham, even Chris Rigg getting some exposure, and Romaine Mundle too in the second half of last season.
Now, Patterson for example has 134 first-team appearances for Sunderland, Neil 163, Hume 99, Ballard 72, and Bellingham 60.
On top of that there’s names like Aaron Connolly, Chris Mepham, and Simon Moore who are all a bit older and more experienced than the average Sunderland player, as well as Luke O’Nien as well as Patrick Roberts who’ve been key for Regis Le Bris so far.
Beale certainly hit the nail on the head with what he said in March. Now with a more experienced Sunderland side, we’re seeing results under Le Bris.
