Sunderland could sign one Europa League finalist, as well as two former Premier League men that are currently free agents.
This season, Sunderland’s recruitment has been night-and-day in difference to the 2023/24 campaign.
Off the back of a brilliant debut Championship season under Tony Mowbray, Sunderland, and Kristjaan Speakman prioritised the signings of youngsters, a bold strategy that didn’t quite work out for the Black Cats as they notched a 16th-place finish.
Speakman clearly learned from his mistakes, changing up his strategy to sign a mix of youth and experience this season, which has equipped Regis Le Bris with a team he has been able to guide towards a probable play-off finish.
Whilst Sunderland’s recruitment has been brilliant, there is no reason why they could add to their ranks with free agents, either straight away or ahead of the 2025/26 season. Because of this, we looked at three potential options that the Sunderland Sporting Director could consider.

Sunderland could sanction a move for Daniel Amartey
One player that currently finds himself as a free agent is former Leicester City man Daniel Amartey. The defensive midfielder, who can also do a job across the back line, is just 30-years-old, and has been without a club since he was released by Besiktas in September.
The 55-cap Ghanaian has vast Premier League experience, accumulating 106 appearances for Leicester City, and also has a league title to his name after playing a minor part in the Foxes’ 2015/16 heroics.
It would be brilliant for Sunderland to sign the free agent, who would provide depth in several areas, whilst also adding vast experience to the dressing room that will only benefit the younger players.

Kristjaan Speakman could sign Ryan Kent
Surprisingly, former Rangers and Liverpool man Ryan Kent currently finds himself without a club after being released by Fenerbache.
He notably reached the Europa League Final with Rangers in the 2021/22 season, only to lose to Frankfurt at the last hurdle.
Kent struggled during his time in Turkey, but he would still boast a goal threat at Championship level after he scored 33 and notched 56 assists for Rangers. He would also provide depth to both wings and an extra attacking option for Le Bris.

Former Man United man Brandon Williams could be touted by Speakman
Finally, former Ipswich Town and Manchester United man Brandon Williams still finds himself without a club, despite playing a prominent role in the Tractor Boys’ promotion last season.
Williams can be utilised on both sides of the defence, and would be a suitable option as a player who can thrive at Championship level.
At 24 years old, he is also yet to reach his peak, and would be an incredibly valuable asset at this level.
