The extortionate amount Sunderland have paid Ian Poveda per game amid fitness concerns, Speakman must be concerned

Sunderland summer signing Ian Poveda has cost the Black Cats a massive amount per appearance this season.

Sunderland have been significantly hampered by injury concerns this season, with several key players spending time on the sidelines.

Most recent, January signing Enzo Le Fee picked up an injury that put him out for over a month, whilst star centre-back Dan Ballard also came off in the defeat to Hull City, and looks out of action for a similar time frame to the French arrival.

However, one Black Cats man that has been in-and (mainly) out of action for Sunderland this campaign is Ian Poveda, with the Colombian only notching six appearances so far this season.

Amid injury and fitness concerns impacting his gametime with Sunderland, his lack of minutes for the Black Cats is highlighted by the extortionate amount he has earned per appearance.

How much Sunderland have paid Ian Poveda per appearance as fitness concerns continue

In the summer transfer window, Sunderland beat Sheffield Wednesday to the signing of Poveda, despite the Colombian spending the latter stages of the 2023/24 season on loan with the Owls.

Unfortunately, the 24-year-old has only played on six occasions this season since his arrival on the 24th July.

Since Poveda joined the club, his reported £9,000 p/w wage, per Capology, has accumulated to a total of £297,000 paid overall to the winger, which totals £49,500 paid to Poveda per game.

Poveda’s lack of game time is staggeringly portrayed in the amount that Poveda has earned per minute on the field (81), meaning that the Colombian has earned £3,666.67 per minute.

Kristjaan Speakman will be concerned over key detail in Ian Poveda’s contract

Whilst Sunderland didn’t offer Poveda a huge wage to join the club, £9,000 p/w is still rather sizable, and it sees him earn more than Wilson Isidor, Romaine Mundle and Trai Hume.

That amount will certainly accumulate whilst poveda continues with his injury woes, and Kristjaan Speakman will be concerned with the fact that Sunderland offered the Colombian a three-year contract when he signed for the club.

The fact that Sunderland offered a multi-year contract to a player with a well known colourful injury record was a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly, and is one that Sporting Director Speakman will certainly be concerned over.
