The Black Cats have sorely missed one unavailable man at times this season.
Sunderland currently find themselves sitting 4th in the Championship table following a very bright 2024/25 season under Regis Le Bris.
With his side sitting just three points away from second-place Sheffield United, the Black Cats will be hoping to continue their fine run to return to the Premier League, although predictions suggest that it will be a difficult challenge at this point of the season.
Le Bris’ side, in particular, have gone from strength to strength in regard to success in the final third, something that was ultimately Sunderland’s Achilles heel last season.
Nonetheless, consistency is still something that Le Bris is still needing to work on for his attacking options, and the French boss may wonder if the imminently returning Romaine Mundle could be the final piece in the puzzle to solve that issue.

Points per game stats proves how crucial Romaine Mundle is for Sunderland
Sunderland winger Mundle picked up an injury earlier on in the season, just when he was enduring an incredible streak of form. The ‘outstanding’ Englishman had bagged four goals and two assists until his untimely injury that saw him out until 2025, with him still yet to return to the Black Cats side.
There is no doubt that Le Bris has done brilliantly in man-managing the situation for his side, with Sunderland still around the promotion chase, despite Mundle’s injury.
Nonetheless, it is obvious that Sunderland could have potentially been in a better position with the winger, as with him in the side, Le Bris’ side recorded an average of 2.07 points per game, whereas they have managed an average of 1.71 without the winger.

Romaine Mundle will be crucial in bringing the best out of Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda
Sunderland’s current striker options of Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda have been superb this season, which is a real breath of fresh air for Black Cats fans, who haven’t seen a reliable striker in red & white since Ross Stewart.
However, there have been games where the pair haven’t been on top form, and much of this comes from a lack of service, something that will be rectified once Mundle does finally return to the side.
Mundle’s return to the side will also give Le Bris the option to play blockbuster loan signing Enzo Le Fee in a central area, which will see the Frenchman thrive in his favoured role.
As stated above, Sunderland are on track for a brilliant season, and achieving the near-impossible will rely on Mundle’s return and the hope that he can replicate his performances prior to his injury.
