One Sunderland player out on loan has struggled to live up to Kristjaan Speakman’s expectations from the start of the season.
The performances of Sunderland’s current players out on loan have been incredibly mixed.
Several players were sent out on loan at the start of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, with Regis Le Bris not being able to guarantee game time to a hatful of players.
Loans were handed to the Sunderland ranks that either struggled for game time last season, or were disappointed in terms of their performances, but thankfully, Nectarios Triantis is shining at Hibernian, whilst Pierre Ekwah is becoming an important player for St Etienne, despite having to undergo a difficult Ligue 1 relegation battle.
However, the grass hasn’t been greener for Frenchman Timothee Pembele, who has severely struggled for game time with Le Havre, and when playing, has not quite looked up to scratch.
Because of his poor performances this season whilst on loan in Ligue 1, it looks as though he won’t fulfill Kristjaan Speakman’s request of the full-back from the start of the season.

Sunderland loanee Timothee Pembele fails to live up to Kristjaan Speakman requirements at Le Havre
It was clear that, when le Bris was appointed as Sunderland boss, he had very little place for Pembele in the side, partly because of his inconsistent performances for the Black Cats in the 2023/24 season.
As a result, it was hoped that he could rejuvenate his form back in France for Le Havre, but it has been far from the case.
In the last eight gameweeks, Pembele has accumulated just 15 minutes of action, being left on the bench on five occasions.
This goes against the point of his loan move, which was to get him back up to speed in a more comfortable environment, and tally plenty of game time.
When the move initially went ahead, per Sunderland Echo, Speakman optimistically said: “Timothée’s availability last season represented an opportunity for us to acquire a player with vast potential.
“We moved quickly to secure his signature but understood that he needed time to recover from an injury that was preceded by another lengthy spell out of action. Although he hasn’t yet managed to force his way into the team, he is now fully fit and has trained consistently.
“The next step is for him to play regularly in a competitive senior environment, and we believe this move will allow him to do that before returning to Sunderland next summer.”

Timothee Pembele Wearside career shows little chance of revival
As seen by Speakman’s comments, the long-term goal was to get the Sunderland loanee back up to speed before playing a part in Le Bris’ 2025/26 squad, but that ‘next step’ simply hasn’t been met.
Because of this, alongside his comments suggesting that the coach supposedly ‘never trusted’ him, it looks as though his chances of appearing in red & white once again are dwindling.
He has the latter stages of the 2024/25 Ligue 1 campaign to make a case for himself being a useful asset for Sunderland next season, but if he isn’t even being trusted to start in defence for Le Havre, then it is safe to say that that ambition can be noted as merely a pipe dream for the Frenchman.
