One player will benefit most if Sunderland hire Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl

One Sunderland player could benefit more than most if the Black Cats poach Sheffield Wednesday’s manager.

Sunderland remain without a permanent manager in place. But ahead of the summer, rumours of potential front-runners are steadily heating up.

Most recently, Sunderland have been linked with Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.

The Football League’s youngest boss, who’s previously worked with RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national team, has thoroughly impressed since taking over the Owls in October.

He’s claimed 12 wins from 30 games in charge, coming after Sheffield Wednesday went without a win until his arrival at the club.

Danny Rohl style of play at Sheffield Wednesday

Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday are a front-foot, aggressive team.

Since the minute he arrived, it was clear the changes he’d made; the Owls pressed relentlessly, high up the pitch, forcing opposition defences into mistakes and into changing their own style to accommodate a fast-pace Wednesday side.

Their style also focusses on the flanks and providing what is more often than not a lone striker in the middle of the box.

Rohl is also a very demanding coach, as he should be; several players who were deemed not up the mark have been ousted from his team.

Danny Rohl could be exactly what Luis Hemir needs at Sunderland

One Sunderland player who could really benefit if Kyril Louis-Dreyfus hires Rohl is Luis Hemir.

The Portuguese forward has been a hot talking point in recent weeks following a string of poor performances under Mike Dodds.

A common theme emerging from his performances is a lack of energy, with BBC pundit Nick Barnes criticising Hemir’s work rate in the last outing vs QPR.

Hemir seems to lack the urgency, or at least the fitness for Championship football as things stand.

But Rohl, who has worked with some top clubs in Europe and some top players and knows the level of fitness required, would surely get Hemir up to speed.

Rohl, although he’s very calm and humorous in the way he comes across, can be quite ruthless with his team selection and if a player’s not giving his all, he won’t play.

That would send a very strong message to Hemir who’s had plenty of minutes recently, despite not making an impact.

He remains a player with potential and with a bit of fine-tuning, he could become a very important player and a valuable asset at the Stadium of Light.

It may just take a coach of Rohl’s nature to come in and get Hemir fit and firing in the Championship.
