Sunderland’s draw against Leeds United will prove to be a memorable game for one bizarre moment.

The Black Cats managed a late draw against Leeds United that finished 2-2 at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland managed to get ahead courtesy of a brilliant goal by Chris Rigg, who was in the right palace at the right time to prod home his second goal in the last three home games, with the previous strike coming against Middlesbrough.

Regis Le Bris’ side certainly started brilliantly, however Leeds United responded in even better fashion as Joel Piroe levelled up the score.

Whilst it looked like Junior Firpo’s great goal that came from a darting run through the centre-of-the-park that split was going to be the game decider as Leeds looked to hold out for an away win, Sunderland managed to spectacularly pull it back to a draw after an incredible moment that saw the away goalkeeper Ilian Meslier spill the ball into his own goal, and it saw Alan Browne handed a surprise first goal for the club.

The moment in the 97th minute of the game will undoubtedly take all the headlines, and whilst it will be seen on the surface as a calamity moment for the Leeds United keeper, it was also a big moment for Browne, who has reflected on his surprise goal.

Sunderland thoroughly deserved point after ‘comical’ moment vs Leeds United

Whilst it looked as if Sunderland were going to be handed their first home defeat of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, despite a solid performance against a strong side, the Black Cats managed to pull it back in incredibly bizarre fashion.

Browne was at the centre of the action and he has reflected on his first goal in red & white as he said, per Sky Sports: “I thought the boys would be fuming [with his ball into the box] but the keeper chucked it in the net.

“I am almost embarrassed but I’ll still claim it.

“In the end we got the lucky break, whether we deserved it or not I am not sure.

“To be fair Leeds came at us, we didn’t really open them up and create the chance we needed.”

It is unreservedly true that the Black Cats deserved a point after going head to head in every fashion against Leeds United and it certainly will be a decisive moment in Le Bris’ side’s 2024/25 season.

Sunderland draw vs Leeds United proves the Black Cats will be in higher echelons of the table

The Black Cats will be hoping that their brilliant start to the 2024/25 Championship campaign will continue throughout the season, and whilst it took a moment of luck for Sunderland to get a tangible and important point against Leeds United, the performance also showed that Le Bris’ side will be in the higher echelons of the league table come the end of the season.

Sunderland showed a lot of quality on the attack, particularly through wing-back Dennis Cirkin and wide player Patrick Roberts, who has shone since the start of the season.

Le Bris’ side managed an incredible fate in the end, but credit should still be handed to the side that pushed right to the very end, as well as the great defensive performances across the park that showed that this current Sunderland outfit can go head-to-head with the biggest sides in the Championship.
