£12.6m striker deal… The four Sunderland transfer stories to keep an eye on ahead of deadline day

As was the case in 2024, Sunderland could be gearing up for a frantic end to the January transfer window, with the Black Cats linked with a number of potential signings.

Last January ended in pretty hectic fashion for Sunderland who completed late deals for Callum Styles and Romaine Mundle.

This January transfer window looks set to see some late additions too with Sunderland having made just one signing so far; the impressive and exciting loan capture of Enzo Le Fee from Roma.

Several strikers are linked with a move to the Stadium of Light right now. There’s also a potential player exit to keep tabs on as well.

Here are all the transfer stories for Sunderland fans to watch out for ahead of the February 3rd transfer deadline…

Chuba Akpom on Sunderland’s transfer radar

One of the many strikers linked with Sunderland during this January transfer window is Ajax’s Chuba Akpom.

The 29-year-old is wanted off the wage bill at Jordan Henderson’s Ajax, and there’s no shortage of interest in the 2022/23 Championship Golden Boot winner at Middlesbrough.

Sunderland are keen on Akpom but so too are Leicester City and Marseille, with a move to one of the three looking most likely for the former Arsenal youngster right now.

Sunderland linked with Matija Frigan

Earlier in January, Matija Frigan was mentioned alongside the Black Cats. Pretty soon it looked like Frigan was nearing a move to Sunderland with suggestions that a deal had been agreed with Belgian side Westerlo.

Since, the rumour has gone cold. Frigan is barely playing for Westerlo which could signal at his possible departure, but could also deter Sunderland from making a move as Regis Le Bris will want any new signings to be fit and firing.

It’s said that the 21-year-old would cost Sunderland €15million (£12.6million), should they go through with a loan-to-buy deal for the Croatian U21 man.

Rabbi Matondo set to leave Rangers

Striker may not be the only attacking position that the Black Cats look to bolster before deadline day, with Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo a target for Sunderland too.

Matondo is free to leave Rangers and was poised to join Coventry City. But a move to Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues fell through because the two teams couldn’t agree on bonus payments.

Since, it’s been revealed that Rangers are in talks over Matondo’s exit, and that there are several Championship clubs eyeing a deal for the 24-year-old.

Jobe Bellingham could leave Sunderland

Sunderland have done well to shun transfer interest in their own players so far this month. But going into deadline day, there may be lingering fears over the future of Jobe Bellingham.

The powerhouse midfielder has been linked with some of Europe’s top clubs throughout this season. Going into deadline day though, it’s Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen who are being linked with Bellingham.

Xabi Alonso’s side are linked with several other exciting youngsters right now though, so whether or not Bellingham is a priority remains to be seen.
