‘Wait and see’: Tony Mowbray claims that 29-year-old Sunderland player could now miss Blackburn Rovers trip

Bradley Dack could miss out on a return to Ewood Park this week.

That’s according to Tony Mowbray, who has confirmed that he is currently nursing a hamstring injury.

Dack joined Sunderland on a free transfer this summer after he was released by Blackburn Rovers. The midfielder made 173 appearances in the six years he spent in Lancashire before injury problems forced him down the pecking order.

The 29-year-old has featured four times for Sunderland since joining the club and netted his first goal in their 5-0 win over Southampton before the international break.

However, he was left out of the match-day squad for the weekend’s victory over QPR and Mowbray has now revealed it was due to a hamstring problem.

The Sunderland boss claimed Dack has a ‘very good chance’ of making the reunion with Rovers, however his latest injury could mean he is forced to stay on Wearside tomorrow night.

Speaking after the QPR game, Mowbray said: “Bradley Dack, it’s not a bad one. He’s got a slight hamstring niggle, it’s not a strain. He’s hoping to be ready for Wednesday, let’s wait and see.

“We could have brought him but we didn’t think that was worth taking that risk today, so he’s got a very good chance for the Blackburn game. He’ll have to at least train on Tuesday if he’s to have a chance of playing on Wednesday night.”

Should Bradley Dack start for Sunderland?

While Dack has claimed a goal and assist for Sunderland already, he will definitely struggle to force his way back into the starting line-up against Blackburn.

Mason Burstow made his debut for the club at the weekend in his absence and it would be a surprise to see him dropped for Dack, especially given their clear need of a striker.

Mowbray clearly has a soft spot for him after spending so long with him at Ewood Park, but he can’t force Dack into the line-up in a position he isn’t comfortable with. For now, he should settle for a place on the bench.
