Sunderland ace Dan Neil has been one of the Black Cats’ standout performers this season amid a playoff race.
Sunderland have enjoyed a strong opening few months to the season and currently sit in sixth and just four points behind third placed Leeds United.
Sunderland have seen several star players rise up and become pivotal this season including Jack Clarke and the subject of this article, Dan Neil.
Neil has been a revelation for Tony Mowbray and is a huge part of what Sunderland have been doing well this season and now he’s been in line for praise from Mowbray.
Mowbray discussed the possibility of Neil becoming a captain and his future at the club, before tipping him for a bright future.

Mowbray on Neil
Speaking to Chronicle Live, Mowbray raved about his midfielder and even went so far as suggesting Neil is destined for the top.
Mowbray said: “We’re all delighted with the season he has had so far. I can see the progression in him during my tenure at the club.
“He’s growing, and if he keeps on growing he will undoubtedly play at the top level and bring his qualities to a really good team – hopefully this one – in the Premier League.”
Ofcourse Mowbray will hope he can achieve this next season, with the Black Cats currently sitting in a good position for at least another year of playoff football.
Dan Neil contract situation
The positive situation around Neil’s excellent form is that he still has multiple years remaining on his contract.
His current contract will expire in June 2026 and was signed back in March 2023.
At the age of just 21, Neil will still be developing by the time this contract expires however Mowbray will be hoping Sunderland will be in the Premier League by then.
We would expect Neil receives a pay rise at some point in the near future as to tempt him away from inevitable interest.
