Sunderland have been urged to make a move on a Championship manager this summer.

Mike Dodds was appointed as Sunderland’s interim coach last month and has so far endured four successive defeats.

The 37-year-old is expected to carry out his duties until the summer though, before Kristjaan Speakman will replace him with a new permanent manager.

Sunderland’s main target appears to be one that they looked at prior to Michael Beale, with Will Still thought to be on the club’s shortlist for what looks likely to be a summer overhaul.

The Reims coach has already admitted that he would be open to joining a Championship club, while many supporters are eager to see Still arrive on Wearside at the second time of asking.

While a long list of managers all over Europe have been linked with the hot seat at the Stadium of Light, Speakman has now been urged to look a little closer to home.

Speaking to Football League World, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, Carlton Palmer, said: “Sunderland and Watford are currently looking for a manager, and I think both will stay with their caretakers until the summer, which gives them time to cast an eye on who’s available.

“One man who’s making a lot of headlines is Sheffield Wednesday’s young manager, Danny Rohl.

“They were absolutely dead and buried, but he’s got them within touching distance of possible survival in the Championship which includes four wins in the last six games.

“There’ll be a lot of interest in Danny, and the club should be worried and look to tie him down on a longer contract.”

Who is Danny Rohl?

For Sunderland fans who haven’t paid much attention to Sheffield Wednesday’s season but see them 23rd in the league table, then it really isn’t as bad as it sounds.

Danny Rohl arrived at Hillsborough having gained valuable experience with Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Southampton and the Germany national team, whilst working with individuals such as Hansi Flick and Ralph Hassenhuttl.

The ‘pretty impressive‘ 34-year-old arrived at Sheffield Wednesday with the club sat seven points from safety, winless in their opening eleven games and in a bit of a mess.

Rohl has now taken the Owls to within a point of safety, has a lower win percentage than only Darren Moore and Gary Megson in the last 36 years and has been hailed as one of the best managers both Barry Bannan and Josh Windass have worked with.

Rohl is well loved by the whole squad and has completely transformed the attitude at the club, while fans will be absolutely heartbroken if he leaves, even if they are relegated.

It feels like he is the young, exciting manager from abroad that the world sees Will Still as, he just doesn’t have the media presence than the Reims manager has earned from his time in France.

Rohl will definitely attract a lot of attention in the summer though and could well be a target for a number of Bundesliga clubs, so it certainly won’t be easy if Sunderland do want to pursue him.
