It would be easy to praise pretty much every player in the Sunderland squad after their win over Sheffield United on New Year’s Day, but one star has been hailed for his role throughout the season.

Sunderland overcame their promotion rivals with a 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night, to close the gap at the top of the Championship table.

The win not only extends Sunderland’s unbeaten home record this season, but also proves Regis Le Bris’ young squad can compete with the very best in the division.

There has been much praise sent the way of the Black Cats after the win, but looking at the bigger picture, one player in particular has been commended for his efforts this season.

Wilson Isidor continues to deliver for Sunderland with match-winning goal

Wilson Isidor scored what turned out to be the winning goal against the Blades, and his impact throughout the campaign has now been celebrated by Sky Sports reporter, Dougie Critchley, who suggests the Frenchman has a ‘big future’.

Taking to Twitter/X, Critchley said: “Seven league goals now for Wilson Isidor, nothing crazy, but that’s a solid return for a 24 year old signed on loan from Zenit. 6ft1, pacey, able to score from pretty much any situation… He’s got such a big future!”

Isidor had gone seven games without a goal through November and December, before getting back on the scoresheet against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day, and now he’s added to his tally once more in spectacular fashion.

Should Sunderland sign Wilson Isidor permanently?

The jury may still be out on Isidor for the long-term, but he’s definitely proving to be an effective summer signing for Sunderland.

Whether the Black Cats should keep hold of him beyond the end of the season will largely depend on how the rest of the campaign goes: If he keeps scoring, there’s no reason not to sign Isidor permanently.

And, if Sunderland are to get promoted this year, they have an obligation to make his move permanent anyway, which would be a win-win for all parties, really.

Still, Sunderland fans want a new striker signing this month, and rightly so. Isidor is delivering a steady flow of goals, but he can’t keep doing it alone all season.
