Sunderland manager latest: Huge update as Black Cats eye Will Still alternative

Fabrizio Romano has shared a huge update on Sunderland’s managerial search.

Sunderland have been managerless for more than a week now after sacking Tony Mowbray last Monday.

Mike Dodds is the current interim boss and he’s since guided the Black Cats to two impressive victories over West Brom and Leeds United respectively, with Sunderland now back in the top six.

Some think Dodds could be a good successor for Mowbray, albeit a shorter-term one at first, but it seems like Reims boss Will Still is the current front-runner.

Until now that is, with Romano revealing on X that Sunderland now have a new ‘top target’ for the Stadium of Light vacancy.

Fabrizio Romano says Sunderland now have new ‘top target’

Posting on X earlier today, transfer guru and insider Romano revealed that nothing has yet been agreed between Still and Sunderland.

Romano added that the Black Cats are still working on a new head coach appointment, but that the club and owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus now have a new ‘top target’ to come in and replace Mowbray.

But Romano doesn’t reveal who that target is.

Who could this mystery manager be?

It’s obviously not known, but there’s a few names who could be speculated here.

The fact that Romano says it’s a ‘top target’ suggests that it isn’t Dodds for one, as he would surely jump at the chance to take on the job, and no negotiating would be needed.

Julien Sable looked like the front-runner before Still and so it could well be him, whilst other names to have come into the running are the likes of Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna.

McKenna remains a positive potential appointment for the Black Cats but given his ongoing success at Portman Road, it seems like an ambitious appointment; or at least a very expensive one, which doesn’t appear to be in Sunderland’s remit right now.

Whilst the club has money, they don’t seem likely to break the bank for someone like McKenna.

Someone like Still remains a more likely candidate and whilst he may not be the no.1 candidate now, he still seems to be firmly in the running, and so Still to Sunderland is still a huge possibility.

Either way, it seems like progress is being made on the situation, as per Romano’s latest update, and fans will be eager to hear more about who their new head coach might be.

Sunderland are back in action against Bristol City this weekend.

The Robins hired Liam Manning as their next boss last month but he’s so far won just one of six games in charge, seeing his side lose 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers last time out.
