One Sunderland loanee put in an excellent performance on his league debut on Tuesday night.

The Blacks Cats have many players out on loan in the 2024/25 season, with some relishing the opportunity and others struggling for game time.

This player has fallen under the latter category so far but that could all change after his heroics in midweek.

Here is a look at the message the 18-year-old has since posted on social media and how Sunderland fans have responded.

Matty Young’s 14-word message after League Two debut

Matty Young is on loan at Salford City this season, having spent some of the last campaign at National League North club Darlington.

The promising goalkeeper had been limited to just five appearances prior to Tuesday night – none of which were in League Two.

But Young finally made his EFL debut two days ago as Salford beat Harrogate Town 2-0 to climb into the top half of the division.

And it did not come easy to the Sunderland academy graduate, as he made a superb double save within two minutes to deny the visitors.

Young was rightfully pleased with his efforts and sent the following 14-word message on X: “Proud to make my EFL League 2 debut, +3 points and a clean sheet.”

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s official X account posted: “Congratulations to Matty Young who kept a clean sheet on his EFL debut this evening! Keep up the great work.”

Sunderland fans respond to Matty Young’s message

Sunderland fans’ support extends beyond the first team, with many keeping an eye on the academy and on-loan players.

Some of them even replied to Young’s post to offer the goalkeeper congratulations on his successful debut.

“Well done that man” and “one of our own” were among the comments, while one supporter tipped him to earn the number one spot at Salford ‘in no time’.

Plus, former Sunderland goalkeeping coach Adrian Tucker also sent Young a nice message: “Great to see Matt, well done and congratulations… keep pushing.”
