Former Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has made a bold decision over his future.

Early last week, it was announced that Sunderland legend Lee Cattermole had took on a surprise role at League One side Bristol Rovers, where it was thought that he would make a difference to the side in terms of their set-pieces.

Fast forward a few days following his arrival, Rovers manager Matt Taylor was relieved of his duties as first-team boss, with Cattermole set to take charge of the side sitting just above the relegation spots following a 2-0 victory against high-flying Birmingham City.

Whilst it looked like a significant opportunity for Cattermole to stake his claim as an EFL coach, he has now made a pivotal decision about his short time at the club just nine days after he joined the club.

Sunderland legend Lee Cattermole leaves Bristol Rovers just nine days into tenure

It has now been reported that, just over a week after joining the struggling League One side, Cattermole has already decided to take a step back from his role as coach at Bristol Rovers, per Bristol Post.

The former Sunderland midfielder, who notched a total of 262 appearances for the Black Cats, scoring on 10 occasions, whilst notching 11 assists, was set to take interim charge of Bristol Rovers’ upcoming games, with a first one against Wrexham, however he left fellow coach Dave Horseman as the sole man leading the southern side.

Whilst it is still yet to be officially announced by the club, it is expected that they will be making a statement about the 36-year-old in due course.

Bristol Rovers task was always a push into the deep end for Lee Cattermole

Following Taylor’s dismissal from Bristol Rovers, it seemed on the surface that it was going to be a challenging task for Cattermole to steer the side towards success in the short term, whilst they look to appoint the successor.

For a side managing just one win in League One in their previous seven games, it seemed as if Cattermole was being pushed into the deep end by coaching a side he had only been familiar with for a matter of days.

Whether Cattermole was simply not up for the challenge, or he was not suited for whoever the new manager was set to be, it seems like a bizarre decision to leave after a matter of days into a new job for him.
