Sunderland striker Mason Burstow is set to return to the squad for the match against Huddersfield Town.

The 20-year-old missed the defeat to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday afternoon with a knock.

The Chelsea loanee has made nine appearances for the Black Cats so far this season, with seven of those being starts.

He has failed to score so far though, with an assist in the win against Sheffield Wednesday at the end of September being his only goal contribution so far.

Journalist Joe Nicholson, for the Sunderland Echo, has said that Burstow is set to return to the squad on Wednesday evening following his absence at the weekend.

“Mason Burstow is also expected to be available again after missing the Plymouth match with a knock.”

Will Burstow finally score?

Striker has been quite the problem position for manager Tony Mowbray so far this season.

None of the recognised strikers have scored so far this season, and games like Saturday show that.

Sunderland had 24 shots on Saturday, with eight of those on target – you have to be scoring with that many chances.

Meanwhile, Plymouth only had ten, and made there’s count.

So with that, it does bring up yet again the conversation about the need for a striker – with Luciano Rodriguez from Uruguay linked with a move last week.

Ross Stewart was the last recognised striker to score for the club, and that was back in January. They clearly have not properly replaced him after he left late in the summer window for Southampton.

Whilst Burstow’s return to action is a boost for Mowbray, the former Charlton striker has struggled this season, so will be eager for more chances to get his first goal and break the club’s striker hoodoo.
