Sunderland fans have given their thoughts after Aaron Connolly opened up on his personal struggles.

Sunderland signed Aaron Connolly on a one-year deal last month, following his release by Hull City.

Since, Connolly has scored for the U21s, with Regis Le Bris hoping to unleash Connolly after this international break.

The 24-year-old could yet make his debut against Hull later this month. And ahead of his possible return to action, he’s opened up on his personal demons.

Connolly spoke about his troubles with alcohol and how it’s held him back in the past, but how he’s hoping to put his struggles behind him at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland fans show overwhelming support for Aaron Connolly

Connolly’s honest interview got a lot of attention on social media; from Sunderland fans and fan of other clubs too.

And the messages all read the same. Everyone wants to support Connolly, give him another chance to reach his potential, and see him succeed.

Sunderland fans’ comments read: “Very brave and open interview from Sunderland’s new signing Aaron Connolly about his personal story

“Takes a lot of character to do so – power to Connolly for such an emotive message.”

And: “Brutal honesty and bravery from Aaron Connolly here – let’s hope Sunderland is the new start this clearly talented player so dearly needs,” with another fan adding: “It’s not easy to talk about things, well done Aaron lad.”

Another Sunderland supporter added: “I really hope he can beat his demons and seize this opportunity to hopefully regain that buzz from football.”

Connolly himself even responded to the comments, posting on X:

Aaron Connolly primed to take golden opportunity

Connolly surely knows he has a great chance to get back on his feet, at a great club that’s moving up, and focusing on younger players like himself.

And with strikers thin on the ground, Connolly could quickly become an important player for the Black Cats, showcasing his skills in his recent U21s outing.

He’s a nimble player with a real eye for goal. He clearly has the backing of the Sunderland fans, and once he gets his first goal, it’ll be a great feeling for all.

Then if Connolly can play some games and stay injure free, score some goals, there’ll no doubt be discussions about extending his deal beyond this season.
