Sunderland fans have all reacted in the same way following recent rumours regarding the return of Alex Neil.

Sunderland have placed Mike Dodds in charge temporarily until they bring in a new permanent manager in the summer, though Kristjaan Speakman is likely to be already considering his options.

While the club are said to be interested in appointing Will Still after previously holding talks with the 31-year-old in December, one man who has controversially thrown his name into the hat is Alex Neil.

The former Stoke City coach left Wearside in 2022 to move to the bet365 Stadium, but was sacked before Christmas.

While Neil did guide Sunderland to the Championship for the first time in four years, his sudden departure and criticism of the club left a sour taste in fans mouths.

Neil was given a lot more freedom in the transfer market with the Potters and signed the likes of Dwight Gayle and Wouter Burger, but is now looking to beg for his job back on Wearside after leaving Stoke just outside the relegation zone.

Sunderland fans have now taken to social media to react to the news that the 42-year-old is ‘open’ to a return, with journalist James Copley putting out a poll on X to find out how many supporters would welcome him back to the club.

It quickly became clear that there were very few people that wanted Neil back at the Stadium of Light, with a whopping 87.2% of fans responding ‘no’ to the poll.

Many of them then took to the comments to explain their reasoning, with a majority offering a similar explanation.
