Fans have been having their say on who their Sunderland player of the season would be so far in the 2024/25 campaign.

Sunderland saw off Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium at the weekend, as Regis Le Bris’ side helped consolidate their play-off position.

Eliezer Mayenda’s brace, one scored controversially and the other brilliantly, after getting on the end of a looping Trai Hume deep cross proved to make the difference for Sunderland, with the Spaniard bagging on his first start since the win at Derby County.

Following the Sunderland win, fans took to X to discuss who they believed was the Black Cats’ player of the season so far, and whilst a handful of names came up, two stood out as favourites.

Sunderland fans highlight Wilson Isidor and Dan Neil as player of the season contenders

Throughout the 2024/25 Championship season, Le Bris’ side has gone from stride to stride, defying expectations to find themselves in 4th position in the latter stages of the campaign.

Throughout the season, many players have shown their top abilities, but in regards to consistency, two names have stood out amongst the rest. In response to a post on X by A Love Supreme, who asked for fans’ player of the season so far, many suggested that Wilson Isidor was a front runner.

One fan said that ‘Isidor loves the club, signing [him] permanently is unreal business, [and he] scores goals’.

He was backed up by another fan that suggested that Isidor had ‘transformed the dynamic of the team after not having a striker for 18 months’. Another fan focused on his abilities in front of goal being crucial for the Black Cats, as they said: “Isidor for me. Our top scorer and third top goal scorer in the league in his first season here. He embodies everything Sunderland and truly wants to be here.”

Another name that was chucked around alongside the French talisman was Sunderland team captain Dan Neil, a player who one fan believes that his ‘consistency has pulled him ahead for me’, whilst another highlighted that he is ‘absolutely running the show and has grown into the captain role’.

Wilson Isidor has been the biggest Black Cats difference maker

In truth, several names could be touted as a contender for player of the season for Sunderland when the campaign draws to its conclusion, with Neil and Isidor very much in that conversation.

However, it needs to be highlighted that what Isidor has offered this season has been the biggest difference between this and last campaign, and that is a presence up top that carries a guaranteed goalscoring ability.

The 24-year-old striker has bagged 12 in the Championship this season, just three less than Clarke finished 2023/24 with, and has also brought the best out of fellow striker Mayenda, whose improvement has been extraordinary.

Sunderland have called out for a goalscoring striker since the departure of Ross Stewart, and it is safe to say that they uncovered gold with the signing of Isidor.
