Kristjaan Speakman has provided fans with an update on Sunderland’s recruitment strategy heading into the January transfer window.
Speaking at the RAWA Q&A, Sunderland’s sporting director admitted that the club need to strike the ‘right balance’ from their transfer business.
After years of overspending on the likes if Jack Rodwell and Will Grigg, Sunderland’s new board have taken a refreshing approach to recruitment.

Following Kyril-Louis Dreyfus’ arrival in 2021, Sunderland have signed only eight players over the age of 23. The Championship club have prioritised spending little on young, exciting players who can develop and reach the levels of the likes of Jack Clarke and Dan Ballard.
Sunderland are likely to dip into the transfer market again in January as they look to battle for promotion, though Kristjaan Speakman has suggested they could focus more on developing the players that are already at the club.
What should be Sunderland’s prioritise in the January transfer window?
Sunderland definitely don’t want to just buy new players in January for the sake of it, especially more younger players.
Bringing in these promising prospects is really exciting, but we need to press the pause button at some point. We have so much youth in this squad and adding to it is only going to prevent others from developing.
But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t buy anyone at all. We still need some more experienced players all over the pitch and that is where we should be investing.
