Sunderland striker Harry Gardiner has signed a new contract at the Stadium of Light.

The club confirmed that the striker had put pen to paper on a new one-year deal this morning after his contract had expired.

Gardiner enjoyed a brilliant season with Sunderland U-21s, netting seven goals in 16 matches as he was nominated for February’s Player of the Month award.

The 19-year-old joined South Shields on loan in March as he was handed his first taste of senior football, winning promotion to the National League North as they won the league title.

Gardiner linked up with Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips, who was very excited to be working with the youngster.

Following his move, Phillips said: “It will be a challenge for Harry, but he brings lots of qualities to our squad and hopefully goals, too.

“He’s the type of striker who loves to run in behind and is a typical fox in the box with good movement.

“I’m excited to work with him and pleased to add some extra competition to the squad for the final six games.”

Gardiner will now continue his development with the youth sides and he will be aiming to make his senior debut in the coming seasons.

While Rigg’s extension is yet to be confirmed, the pair are both highly rated at the academy and could be huge assets in years to come.

Rigg became the club’s youngest outfield player when he made his debut against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, while Gardiner will be eager to make his impact on the first team.

Wearside has become the perfect place for young players to grow and seeing these players commit to the club is very exciting for the fans.
