The 2024/25 Championship fixtures have been released as Regis Le Bris learns of his first competitive opponents in the Sunderland dugout.
It has been a long wait for many Sunderland fans for the 2024/25 Championship fixtures. The previous campaign ended well over a month ago after a terrible 2024.
However, for many of the Stadium of Light faithful, there is now more optimism in the air. Sunderland finally appointed a new permanent manager with Regis Le Bris set to take command of the side.
With such an overbearing issue now sorted, the club can finally get preparations underway for the 2024/25 campaign.
Promotion to the Premier League will no doubt be the aim. Sunderland were amidst the playoffs for a good portion of the 2023/24 season until they completely collapsed.
In this article, Sunderland AFC News compares Sunderland’s first five Championship fixtures for the 2024/25 campaign to their potential playoff rivals.

Cardiff vs Sunderland – August 10
Sunderland’s first game of the 2024/25 campaign is away to Cardiff. Sunderland ended their terrible winless streak at the Cardiff City Stadium last season with a 2-0 victory.
Now, Le Bris will be looking to repeat this feat in his first competitive game in charge of the club.
Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday – August 17
Returning to the Stadium of Light, Le Bris’ first competitive match at his home stadium will be up against Sheffield Wednesday.
Weirdly, the fixture was also the final game of the 2023/24 campaign, with the Owls coming away with a 2-0 victory.
With Le Bris announcing himself to the Sunderland faithful, he will be looking to avoid this fate.
Sunderland vs Burnley – August 24
Staying at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland will host recently relegated Burnley in their following match.
The Clarets won the Championship two seasons prior, however, over the summer they have lost Vincent Kompany, the manager who guided them to this feat.
With the game no doubt set to be a massive task for Sunderland, it could prove to be a highly entertaining and memorable match.
Portsmouth vs Sunderland – August 31
For Sunderland’s fourth fixture, they are on their travels yet again. Portsmouth have just been promoted back into the Championship after a sensational League One campaign which saw them win the division.
The match will no doubt be a trek for many of the Sunderland faithful aiming to go to the match.
Plymouth vs Sunderland – September 14
Sunderland’s fifth game of the season is another long trek. Plymouth is the furthest journey the Black Cats have to undertake in their Championship season. Last year, the match was far from enjoyable as they were defeated 2-0.
In this campaign, the squad will be looking to make amends for this to get off to the best possible start under Le Bris.
