Sunderland have reunited with German manufacturers hummel after a 30 year break.

Hummel first started to manufacture Sunderland kits in 1988, doing so for six years before Sunderland went to Avec.

Since, the Black Cats have had kits made by Asics, Diadora, Lonsdale, Umbro, Adidas, and Nike on two occasions.

But fans appear to be very pleased with the latest home shirt made by hummel, which features a lot of details about the history of Sunderland itself.

Per the club website: “The 2024-25 home shirt pays homage to the City of Sunderland’s proud shipbuilding heritage, with the all-over stripes referencing the Club’s former crest and the inner neck adorned with archival images depicting shipyards and vessels.”

The home shirt also has ‘From the banks of the River Wear’ written on the inside of the collar.

Pierre Ekwah verdict on Sunderland 2024/25 home shirt by hummel

Speaking to the club after the home kit reveal on Thursday, Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah gave his verdict on the new home shirt.

The Frenchman said: “The top is nice, isn’t it? The top is good, the fit is nice. Even just to chill about, it’s good to wear.

“The detail is nice… When you buy your shirt, just be aware. Check every detail on there, they really went crazy in there. I really, really like the new shirt.”

Ekwah, along with Trai Hume and Aji Alese modelled the new Sunderland home shirt for the official reveal on Thursday.

A summer of fresh starts for Sunderland

A new and popular home shirt is something of a rare positive for Sunderland fans right now, after what’s been a tough last few months for them.

The club’s prolonged search for a new manager caused fans to lose a lot of faith in the Sunderland owners and in sporting director Kristjaan Speakman as well.

But the club have made a good decision to reunite with hummel for their new kits, and hummel have done a fantastic job.

Sunderland under Nike were left with a lot of copy and paste kits, which often looked the same every season and always lacked any kind of personality.

But this new kit has plenty of personality and detail. Fans will now hope that Speakman can put some exciting new players in the kit and that Le Bris can work wonders with them in the Championship next season.
