One Sunderland man once again showed how much potential he has with another fantastic performance for his country.

Sunderland fans have had little to shout about in 2024. The Black Cats’ playoff ambitions have diminished over recent months with interim manager Mike Dodds yet to win a game.

It seems that Sunderland’s 2023/24 campaign is all but over as the first-team squad stumbles to the finish line.

Many of the players on show at the Stadium of Light have largely disappointed with many at fault for the dramatic drop-off in 2024.

However, one man who has given fans a bit of hope for the future is youngster Chris Rigg. The 16-year-old has managed to push his way into the starting XI in recent weeks which has caught the eye of multiple Premier League clubs.

Dodds claimed that the youngster is ‘wonderful’ in recent weeks and fans should be ‘really excited’ to see what he has to offer.

Now, with the international break underway, Rigg once again took the opportunity to showcase his talents with his country on Saturday.

Since his England Under 17s debut in October 2022, Rigg has been a regular in the youth squad. Representing the Three Lions, the midfielder is aiming to reach the Under 17s European Championships.

In the week, Rigg was captain of the side as they saw out a 5-1 victory against Northern Ireland, bagging two assists.

Now, the Sunderland sensation has showcased his ability in front of goal as he netted England’s second in a 5-0 win against Hungary.

It was another impressive performance from Rigg, who was once again the captain, with the Young Lions team now set to face France on Tuesday in their final European qualifier.

It is rare for any team to come across a talent such as Rigg. The maturity and leadership the midfielder possesses at such a young age is phenomenal.

With his abilities only going to grow as he gets older, Sunderland must do everything in their power to ensure the club grows with them.

Plenty of sensational talents have come out of the academy in recent years. Both Jordan Pickford and Jordan Henderson went on to become regular England internationals, with the latter earning plenty of trophies.

Unfortunately, there is a chance Rigg could move on with teams such as Newcastle eyeing the youngster.

If there is a chance that the midfielder would be willing to stay, Sunderland must grab it by both hands as he is the future of the club.
