Sunderland have opened contract talks with Dan Ballard.
That’s according to Sunderland Nation, who have claimed that the Black Cats are looking to fend off interest for the defender.
Ballard moved to Wearside from Arsenal for £2 million last summer and has proven himself as one of the Championship’s best defenders, despite his debut campaign being hampered by injuries.
The centre-back made 19 appearances for Sunderland last season and his stellar performances unsurprisingly earned him some interest, with West Ham one club that are eager to bring him back to the top flight.

There has been little update on the Irons’ pursuit of Ballard since June, however it looks like Sunderland are still desperate to tie him down in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.
The ‘immense’ 23-year-old still has two years remaining on his contract with the option of a further year, however Tony Mowbray’s side remain keen to offer him fresh terms to avoid temptation.
Ballard is set to remain as one of the first names on the teamsheet this season, despite the arrivals of Jenson Seelt and Nectarios Triantis.
How will play alongside Dan Ballard for Sunderland?
Alongside the likes of Jack Clarke and Trai Hume, Dan Ballard is one player that will undoubtedly start for Sunderland in every game that he is available.
The defender proved a huge talent last season and could be an even better player for years to come if the Black Cats can keep hold of him.

Tony Mowbray has a number of centre-backs to choose ahead of their opener against Ipswich Town and it seems like the most logical decision to hand a start to Danny Batth.
While the veteran has been heavily linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light this summer, Batth was the club’s Player of the Season last time out and there is no real reason why he should be dropped.
The likes of Selt, Triantis and O’Nien will have to fight for their place in the starting line-up – while the latter’s versatility will once again come in very handy.
