Sunderland have opened contract talks with Patrick Roberts.

The Black Cats are eager to tie the winger down to a fresh deal after a stellar season in the Championship, according to Sunderland Nation.

Roberts’ free transfer to Wearside in January 2022 looked to be a huge bargain to fans, who certainly haven’t been disappointed with his performances over the last 18 months.

The 26-year-old netted the winning goal in Sunderland’s League One second leg play-off clash to help them win promotion last year, before bagging five goals and seven assists upon their return to the Championship.

Roberts signed a two-year contract last summer, however the club are now eager to offer him fresh terms to avoid any chance of him leaving for free at the end of the season.

The former Manchester City youngster has become a fan favourite at the Stadium of Light and is firmly in Tony Mowbray’s first team plans, with the Sunderland boss previously labelling the forward ‘amazing’ and ‘magic’ following a sensational partnership with Amad Diallo.

Sunderland can’t let Patrick Roberts enter the final 12 months of his contract

Sunderland have done very well to tie down key players to new deals over the last year or so, with the likes of Trai Hume, Dennis Cirkin and Anthony Patterson all putting pen to paper.

With Ross Stewart and Jack Clarke also in the Black Cats’ sights, the Wearside outfit now need to focus on extending Patrick Roberts’ stay at the club.

The attacker was a huge coup on a free transfer and it would be very surprising if clubs didn’t jump at the chance of snapping him up on the cheap if we failed to land him on a new deal.

The club are doing the right thing in opening talks now and hopefully they can get things wrapped up as soon as possible.
