Sunderland coach Adam Asghar is set to leave the club.

That’s according to the Sunderland Echo, who have reported that the U-18s coach will join Southampton this summer.

The Scot spent his brief playing career in his home country before moving into coaching only four years ago.

Asghar began his coaching career with Motherwell’s U-16 and U-18 teams before he was appointed senior academy head coach at Dundee United, working under his father Tony Asghar.

The 29-year-old’s success in Scotland saw him move to Wearside to become the U-18s head coach in October 2022.

Asghar did a brilliant job with the young Black Cats, finishing runners-up in the Northern Section of the U18 Premier League and pushing Manchester City all the way in the fight to become champions.

Asghar will now depart Sunderland to become Southampton’s U-21 coach following their relegation to the Championship. He will be eager to develop some exciting young talents at an academy that has welcomed the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Gareth Bale and Kevin Phillips.

The Saints were looking to replace Dave Horseman, who led their U-21 side to the Premier League 2 Division Two title last season, after he was appointed Forest Green Rovers’ head coach. They also brought in Tony Mowbray‘s brother, Darren Mowbray, earlier this summer as their new head of recruitment.

Sunderland are yet to confirm Asghar’s departure, however they are already planning ahead after an advertisement for a new U-18 lead professional development coach appeared on the club’s official website.
