Swansea’s Harrison Ashby is on loan from Newcastle and following his display against Sunderland has made a claim.

Swansea held Sunderland to a 0-0 draw on Saturday with Harrison Ashby taking a portion of the credit. The full-back who is on loan from Newcastle managed to stop Jack Clarke and in doing so stopped the Black Cats.

In a post-match interview which is quoted by the Sunderland Echo, Ashby gave his verdict on the game.

“It’s one of them where before the game you hear all the noise, everyone saying you’ve got to do that, you’ve got to do this. It’s just getting down to what I know best, obviously, I’m a right-back, which is one-on-one defending.”

Continuing to discuss coming up against Clarke, he said: “I think I held my own and stopped him at what he likes doing best which is scoring goals. I think the lads like the midfielders, the other centre-halves helped me in doing that as well, and forwards.”

Ashby on Sunderland

Continuing, Ashby then made a claim about Sunderland in which he admitted his parent club Newcastle’s city rivals are a ‘big team’.

“I think like some of the lads have said before they are like our extra player in there. Even though we had 10 men it feels like we’ve got 11.

“I think they were literally on it and all I can say is thank you to them. I think they understand the hard work that goes in and playing a big team like Sunderland when you’ve got 10 men to get the draw. A massive thank you to them and we’ll go again.”

Sunderland the benchmark

Opponents celebrating a draw, regardless of being down to 10 men, is nothing but praise for Tony Mowbray‘s side and where he has taken the team.

Sunderland will be frustrated to have dropped points however given the desperation to once again be in the playoffs at least.

Mowbray will be optimistic of bouncing back however when they welcome Birmingham City to the Stadium of Light with a win enough to move the Black Cats possibly into a playoff position.
