Newcastle defender, Dan Burn has made an admission following the Tyne-Wear derby suggesting he wants Sunderland to be promoted.

It wasn’t a weekend to remember for Sunderland following a heavy 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light.

There were some criticisms towards Michael Beale especially with some comparisons made between him and Eddie Howe.

A brace from Alexander Isak and a Dan Ballard own goal was enough for the away side to take away the derby day spoils.

It must be said that it was a disappointing day for everyone associated with the club but there was one thing to be positive about. The atmosphere within the ground was top-class and showed the meaning of this derby.

As a result of this, fans have been reminded of the feeling of this fixture which will be sorely missed given how long the gap between them has been.

Now a Newcastle man has opened up about Sunderland and his hopes for them in this Championship campaign.

Dan Burn on Sunderland promotion claim

It will come as a surprise to fans of the Black Cats that a Newcastle player has made these kinds of comments.

Speaking with I News, Dan Burn has opened up about playing more derbies and Sunderland getting into the Premier League. Given that he is a Magpies fan through and through these comments certainly can’t have been easy to say.

On that, he said: “The atmosphere was class and it makes me want to play them even more.

“I will probably get pelters for saying it but I’d like them to come up. It would be nice because those are the games, as a kid, I wanted to see. It would be great for them to come up and we could do it more often. It’s been such a long time and it was a special day.”

This was the first derby since 2016 according to 11v11, and as a result, there was a lot of pent-up emotion in the fixture. It must be said that the fans would love to see more of these games on a regular basis.

This says a lot about the atmosphere and meaning behind this fixture that even Newcastle fan and players are hoping Sunderland gets promoted. It must have been a struggle for Burn to even utter those words.

Although the result didn’t go as anyone associated with the Black Cats would have wanted, the atmosphere was enough to have everybody hooked.
