Luke O’Nien holds incredible record at Sunderland that even he can’t believe, it might just make him a club legend

He may have only been at the club for just over six years, but Luke O’Nien has now written himself into the Sunderland history books.

Signed from Wycombe Wanderers back in 2018, Luke O’Nien has been a constant presence in the Sunderland squad, seeing them rise from League One to now pushing for promotion from the Championship.

Under Regis Le Bris this season, O’Nien has had to prove his versatility, filling in across the back four effectively.

While ordinarily a full-back, O’Nien has shone at centre-back of late, too. But, praise aside, the 30-year-old now has cold, hard facts to back up his claim at being a Sunderland great.

No one has played at the Stadium of Light more times than Luke O’Nien

Incredibly, O’Nien now holds the record of making the most appearances at the Stadium of Light of any player in the history of the ground.

The defender now has 140 appearances on home turf for Sunderland, putting him ahead of club icons like John O’Shea, Lee Cattermole, Michael Gray, and even Kevin Phillips.

The rest of the top five all appeared at the Stadium of Light for other teams at one stage or another, too, while O’Nien has reached the landmark solely as part of the Sunderland squad.

Commenting on his achievement on Twitter/X, O’Nien recalled his home debut for the Black Cats, in which he was hooked off at half-time after a nervy display, and joked: “Not bad considering my debut… All jokes aside, I feel extremely privileged seeing this stat and I will continue to give everything I have each time I step on that beautiful pitch.”

Meanwhile, Roker Report celebrated O’Nien’s contributions to the team, writing: “Some stat, this. From the depths of League One to the heights of the Championship’s top six, and all through sheer professionalism, dedication, and a relentless desire to improve.”

Has Luke O’Nien done enough to be considered a Sunderland legend?

There should be plenty more home games for O’Nien to extend his record — another 14 this season alone, including Saturday’s clash with Norwich City.

O’Nien has been valuable to Sunderland’s efforts this season, putting in big performances wherever he has been asked to play, and though he may be into his thirties now, he shows no signs of letting up.

The word ‘legend’ is thrown around a lot, perhaps too often, and it would be unjust to describe O’Nien as such, despite his amazing achievement with Sunderland. But, there is no denying he has been an impeccable servant to the club, and he will always have this record.

That alone will etch him into the history books, and indeed the hearts of the Sunderland fans, for generations to come.
