Sunderland ‘met’ with another manager target last week, just days before Kyril Louis-Dreyfus confirmed an appointment was ‘imminent’.

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus announced that Sunderland would be bringing in a new manager imminently on Friday, after 100 days had passed without a head coach.

It was expected that Pascal Jansen would be the man to take over on Wearside, having left AZ Alkmaar earlier this year.

Fans were excited by his potential appointment but were left angered once again when reports claimed he was no longer in the running.

Given that the club were set for an ‘imminent’ appointment, it surely suggested that Sunderland had their eyes on someone else and were confident of wrapping up a deal fairly quickly.

It now appears that that man could be Liam Rosenior, who is out of work after he was sacked by Hull City last month.

Journalist Michael Graham wrote on X: “Liam Rosenior met with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus about taking Sunderland job on Tuesday last week. May be related to KLD’s ‘imminent/final stages’ statement on Friday and subsequent dropping of interest in Pascal Jansen. Definitely one to keep an eye on.”

Sunderland have been through so many different manager targets on their very long shortlist, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Liam Rosenior is one of very few coaches left.

Would Liam Rosenior be a good appointment?

The 39-year-old is a young and promising manager who arguably shouldn’t have been sacked by Hull after narrowly missing out on the play-offs.

The Tigers had the lowest goal tally out of the top nine teams in the Championship, while they conceded six goals less than they scored.

While perhaps not the best record, he did turn things around at Hull after joining them just outside the relegation zone in 2022.

He may not be as an exciting of a name as Pascal Jansen, but it does seem like a sensible appointment from Sunderland.

He has been out of work for over a month though, so it really begs the question as to why the Black Cats still haven’t appointed him.
