Kristjaan Speakman believes there are three things Sunderland have already done this season which should lead to a ‘really good’ 2025.

There are mixed feelings towards the Black Cats’ sporting director among the Sunderland fanbase as he has some good decisions and some bad ones.

But Speakman appears to be really optimistic about what he and new manager Regis Le Bris are building at the Stadium of Light.

Here is the 45-year-old’s assessment of the club’s situation 18 games into the Championship campaign, with a look ahead to next year.

Kristjaan Speakman has high expectations for Sunderland in 2025

Sunderland’s recent form has somewhat cast a shadow over what has been a positive start to the 2024/25 campaign.

The Black Cats might not have won any of their previous six games but they remain in fourth position in the Championship table.

The majority of supporters would have taken that if it were offered to them before the season kicked off in August.

Speakman was quick to make the point that Sunderland are currently in a great place and gave three reasons why.

“I think it’s been really positive for us to integrate the coach, get the group together, refine the playing style,” he said to the club’s media team.

“The proof points have been some really good performances on the whole and some really good results. Obviously, that puts us in a really good position going into 2025. I couldn’t be happier really at the moment.”

Kristjaan Speakman must deliver in January transfer window

The January transfer window will play an important role in Sunderland’s pursuit of promotion to the Premier League.

Le Bris’ squad has plenty of talent already so they could make the play-off places anyway, but some investment next month would certainly enhance their chances.

Speakman has said that Sunderland are doing ‘loads of preparation’, which will give supporters confidence, but actions speak louder than words.

The sporting director should look to get at least two signings over the line, with a backup left-back and goalscorer two of the squad’s biggest needs.
