Luke O’Nien has agreed a new deal at Sunderland.

That’s according to Mike McGrath, who has reported that the versatile defender has committed his future to the Black Cats.

O’Nien arrived on Wearside from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018 and has since played all over the pitch, featuring on both flanks, in midfield and in central defence for Sunderland.

The 28-year-old has scored 18 goals and provided 15 assists in 224 appearances for the club, being named the Young Player of the Season in his first campaign before making the 2020-21 League One Team of the Season.

O’Nien signed a three-year contract extension in 2021 and has now reportedly put pen to paper on a new deal ahead of his expiry next summer.

O’Nien’s regular appearances in Sunderland’s defence this season has come under fair discussion following Danny Batth’s demotion to the bench, though he received plenty of praise for an exceptional performance against Rotherham United at the weekend.

The defender’s new contract comes hours after the news of his latest heroics, with eye witnesses claiming that O’Nien was spotted saving a dog’s life on a Wearside beach.

The reports claimed that a dog had got into trouble in the water on Thursday evening and O’Nien was seen pumping the dog’s chest until the labrador coughed up seawater and was able to breathe again.

It’s fair to say O’Nien has become a fan favourite during his time at the Stadium of Light and there is a decent argument to be made that he is perhaps the nicest man in football.
