Much to the surprise of Sunderland fans, a somewhat controversial former Black Cats player holds an outstanding Championship record.

Sunderland are now playing their third season back in the Championship after previously spending a long four years in League One.

And Regis Le Bris has the club back on track after a disappointing campaign last time round, with Sunderland finishing in 16th place after reaching the play-offs the season before.

There are a few cracks starting to appear for Sunderland but on the whole, the Frenchman is doing a fine job. Whether or not the Black Cats get out of the Championship this season though remains to be seen.

This campaign is just Sunderland’s sixth second tier season since 2000. During their years in the Championship, there’s been highs and lows, and plenty of well-liked and not-so-liked players too.

One who may fall into the latter category is goalkeeper Lee Camp, who played on loan at the Stadium of Light from Cardiff City during the 2017/18 Championship season.

Lee Camp boasts incredible Championship record that Sunderland fans can’t believe

As it turns out, the 40-year-old Camp is actually the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in Championship history.

In total, he’s made 523 Championship appearances and kept 142 clean sheets, best known for spells with the likes of Derby County, QPR, Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City, and a horde of other teams.

Camp last played for Wrexham in 2022 but has since retired. He counts 15 clubs on his CV and many of them he played for on multiple occasions, whilst also playing nine times for Northern Ireland.

Sunderland though was one of three clubs that Camp played for and didn’t keep a single clean sheet.

He featured 12 times for the Black Cats and conceded 22 goals. Forest was the club he kept the most clean sheets for, recording 59 in 193 appearances.

Sunderland fans can’t believe Lee Camp’s Championship record

The news has recently come about on X and needless to say, it garnered quite a reaction from Sunderland fans who describe Camp as ‘worst keeper I’ve ever seen’.

But the stats don’t lie: Camp had a prolonged and quite successful career winning promotion twice from the Championship, with QPR and Bournemouth, also winning a number of individual awards.

Camp was named Forest’s Player of the Season for the 2009/10 season and Rotherham United’s Player of the Season for 2015/16.

The veteran shot-stopper was also named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for 2009/10, where he kept 19 clean sheets in 45 league outings for Forest, conceding just 38.
