Tony Mowbray has given a positive update on the injury status of Jenson Seelt and Jay Matete.

Speaking to the club, the Sunderland boss has revealed that neither of them have picked up a serious injury after they both limped off following Sunderland’s win over North Carolina.

The Black Cats brought their pre-season tour of the United States to an end in the early hours of this morning, having beaten the American outfit 4-2.

Having opened the scoring just four minutes into the clash, Matete was then brought off after he was on the end of a horror challenge. Meanwhile, Selt appeared to suffer a recurrence of his recent ankle injury after making his first appearance for the club.

Speaking after the match, Mowbray said: “I don’t think they’re too serious, I think they’re [just] knocks.

“Jenson has had an ankle and I think when he takes a knock on it, it shakes him up. I don’t think there’s a major problem there.

“Jay just took a kick. He scored a great goal and was full of energy breaking forward – I’m sure he’ll be fine.

Dennis Cirkin is nearing a return from injury for Sunderland

Dennis Cirkin ended his season early when he picked up an injury during Sunderland’s 3-0 win over Preston North End in May.

The defender was scheduled to miss out on the Black Cats’ trip to the US, though they have been handed a boost after he was spotted in training on the morning of their win over North Carolina.

Tony Mowbray previously admitted he was hopeful that Cirkin would be fit for the start of the season and it certainly looks that way, with the 21-year-old potentially available for the side’s upcoming meetings with Mallorca and Hartlepool United.

Sunderland are set to host Ipswich Town in their Championship opener in two week’s time.
