How recent exits now prove ‘logic’ behind delayed manager appointment at Sunderland

A journalist has highlighted the ‘logic’ behind Sunderland’s recent managerial decision.

Sunderland sacked Michael Beale back in February, and while supporters wondered who would replace him, the club instead decided to wait until the summer.

Mike Dodds came in as interim head coach and fans were content with his appointment – until he went onto win only two of his 13 games in charge.

Sunderland were falling further and further down the table, and the board failed to do anything about it as they continued to wait it out to appoint a successor.

The campaign has now come to an end and fans are now eagerly awaiting the arrival of a head coach that they have been waiting for, for months.

Why there is ‘logic’ behind Sunderland’s decision

Recent reports that they would have to wait at least three weeks has frustrated the city’s faithful, but journalist Michael Graham has now claimed the summer exits of Liam Rosenior and Will Still has shown ‘logic’ in Sunderland’s decision to wait until the end of the season.

Liam Rosenior was sacked by Hull City yesterday after failing to make the play-offs, while Reims confirmed Still would leave the club by mutual consent last week.

Writing on X, Graham said: “The likes of Will Still and Liam Rosenior becoming available shows there was some logic behind #SAFC waiting until the summer to appoint a new coach. Also means zero excuses if they don’t get it right, too…”

Sunderland could still get it extremely wrong though

If Sunderland had appointed Michael Beale’s replacement back in February, then it seems highly likely that we would have ended up with Paul Heckingbottom.

Most of the managers we have since been linked with have been in jobs and may not have wanted to leave with only months remaining.

While Heckingbottom could have been a strong replacement, it would have been a lot to ask of him to completely turn around the season with such a young squad, extremely low on confidence.

It would have still been beneficial to have an appointment lined up straight after the Sheffield Wednesday defeat, but the sackings that could follow this month could give the Black Cats a good opportunity to find their man.

But if Sunderland fail to appoint someone like Will Still, Danny Rohl, Liam Rosenior or Rene Maric, then they have a real problem on their hands.

Waiting months to appoint a new head coach really relies on one outcome, and that is to bring in the best possible manager who fans can have no complaints about.

Though the fanbase will be extremely wary of what is to come given the board’s decisions over the last year or so.
