Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy was on the receiving end of some ‘not too complimentary’ chants from Sunderland fans on Tuesday night.

Sunderland welcomed league leaders Leicester City to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.

Both teams went into this one on the back of losing streaks with Sunderland’s stretching four games and Leicester’s three.

Though it was the latter who’d come out on top, thanks to a Vardy goal in the 13th minute securing a 1-0 win for Leicester.

The 37-year-old has now scored 11 goals in 25 Championship appearances this season and his goal last night saw the Foxes maintain their three-point lead at the top.

Early in the game, Sunderland fans were heard chanting at Vardy; chants described as ‘not too complimentary’ by journalist Phil Smith.

But Vardy reacted by telling the Black Cats faithful to be louder; a move which sprung some laughter on what was, on the whole, another unpleasant outing for Sunderland.

Vardy, a Premier League title-winner and Golden Boot-winner, sees his Leicester City contract expire in the summer following a 12-year spell at the club, which could end with a second promotion from the Championship with the Foxes.

Vardy showing Sunderland exactly what they’re missing this season

Vardy is twice the age of many of the Sunderland players who played on Tuesday night; he was on the same pitch as 16-year-old Chris Rigg who made his full league debut against Leicester.

But Vardy was the difference and it goes to show that age isn’t always a bad thing.

The Sunderland owners seem determined to keep on lowering the average age of the side, ousting names like Danny Batth and Alex Pritchard this season.

Though if Tony Mowbray and then Michael Beale had had both of those players in the side, it might well be a different story for Sunderland this season.

The Black Cats are now 10 points outside the top six and attentions are rapidly turning towards the summer and next season, with a managerial appointment at the very top of their agenda.

A young coach looks set to come in and compliment the likewise set of players.

But perhaps Kristjaan Speakman and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus will learn from recent mistakes, and maybe think twice about having such a young side.

Vardy offers so much balance and quality still to the Leicester side; someone like him in the Sunderland XI could make a huge difference for whoever the manager is next time round.
