A former Sunderland manager could be poised for a surprise return to the Championship, with currently managerless Millwall.

Sunderland don’t look set to be going through managerial uncertainty for a while now, with Regis Le Bris firmly in place at the helm.

The Frenchman arrived in the summer, no less than four moths after Sunderland sacked Michael Beale way back in February.

Le Bris has since won 11 of his 22 games in charge and after a 3-2 comeback win at Swansea City last time out, his Black Cats side sit in 4th place of the Championship table.

Despite the strong start, Le Bris has suggested he’s facing an uncertain future at the Stadium of Light with results of late having been very mixed.

But a win against Norwich City on Wearside this weekend would put to bed a lot of fans’ recent worries about the team, which has been battered and bruised by injury.

And in the remainder of this season, Sunderland could yet go up against a very familiar face in former manager Alex Neil.

Alex Neil a contender for Millwall alongside name who rivalled Michael Beale at Sunderland

Neil was the man to guide Sunderland out of League One after four long years in the English third tier. Though he left for Stoke City soon after the start of the 2022/23 season, following the club’s promotion.

Mirror now report that Neil is among the leading contenders to take charge of Millwall. It comes just a few weeks after Neil was linked with a move to the MLS with Philadelphia Union.

Also in the running is Steven Schumacher. Sunderland were briefly linked with Schumacher before they eventually hired Michael Beale in December 2023.

Regis Le Bris earns Alex Neil comparisons at Sunderland

Upon his arrival at Wearside during the summer, pundits and fans alike had plenty to say about Le Bris and their initial impressions of him.

Journalist Phil Smith even compared Le Bris to Neil in the sense that both are ‘detached from the noise’, solely focused on football.

Smith said: “He is so detached from the noise, and the fuss, and I think that’s such a powerful quality to have.

“So single-minded, and you can’t really tell if they’ve won or lost.”

Neil remains a very experience EFL boss and he could be a potentially good fit for Millwall, who Harris has left in 13th place of the Championship table.
