Peter Reid has applauded Tony Mowbray for doing a ‘brilliant job’ at Sunderland.

Speaking to South Shields’ website, the former Black Cats manager shared where he hopes his former club will finish this season.

Peter Reid spent seven years in charge on Wearside in which he helped the team win the First Division title twice before challenging for European qualification in the Premier League.

The 67-year-old has since been fondly remembered in Sunderland and clearly still has a keen eye for the Black Cats, admitting that he is desperate to see the club back in the top flight once again.

Reid was in South Shields for an interview alongside Kevin Keegan this month and was asked about the rivalry between the two. He said: “I was at Man City my first job and then when I got the Sunderland job he was at Newcastle.

“Bryan Robson was at Middlesbrough and it was tough competing with them.

“Kevin at Newcastle it was really difficult, but in the end we had three top clubs in the North East and I can’t wait for the three clubs to be back in the Premier League where they belong.”

Reid went onto speak about Sunderland how they have fared in recent years, with the former midfielder really impressed with the current crop.

“Sunderland have done well, Boro have had a bit of an iffy start but I think Michael Carrick will get it right,” he said.

“Sunderland, Tony Mowbray has done a brilliant job, young players, getting them playing exciting football and the job he’s done has been absolutely outstanding.

“Fingers crossed, Premiership.“

Peter Reid is hopeful that Sunderland will get promoted

The Black Cats’ promotion chances were looking bleak at the start of the season as they suffered two defeats in a row in the Championship, however their form has improved since.

After taking seven points from nine and thrashing Southampton 5-0 last time out, Mowbray’s side currently sit nineth in the league table and can creep into the play-off spots with a win over QPR this weekend.

The Wearside outfit will be confident they can replicate last season’s 3-0 victory, with their opponents only sat one point behind them.
