Sunderland defender Dan Ballard has backed new-boy Hemir to be a huge success at the Stadium of Light.

Hemir signed for the Black Cats this summer from Benfica, having spent his time featuring for their B team last season.

The 19-year-old started the season’s opening game against Ipswich Town in the defeat.

But last week he was moved onto the bench with Bradley Back taking his place in a false nine role.

Hemir could however find himself back in the limelight this upcoming weekend against Rotherham with his physical qualities likely to be beneficial.

Ballard on Hemir

Hemir has been signed based on a mixture of his potential and current top-class ability.

His quality is impressive but raw, meaning he will take some time to adapt to playing in the hard Championship.

Reported in the Northern Echo, Emir’s teammate Dan Ballard expressed his excitement over the youngster.

“He’s got some really good qualities and he’s naturally a fantastic footballer,” said the centre-half on the teenagers ability.

Before continuing to say, “It’s probably going to take maybe a few games to adapt to this style of play. I remember my first games in the Championship, it was tough.”

Ballard admitted it’s unlikely that Hemir hits the ground running but the fruits he could bare will be worth it.

“He’s not going to hit the ground running from minute one, it might take a few games, but I think you’ll see hopefully in the next few games or first part of the season him really start to show his qualities. He’s a goalscorer so is someone who we need.”
