A journalist has named eleven key points that Sunderland should take away from the defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

Sunderland fans were in surprisingly high spirits heading into the weekend, having won their first game in eight matches against Cardiff City on Good Friday.

The Black Cats were set to host Blackburn, who were winless in ten matches and hadn’t won on the road in over four months.

But, Sunderland being Sunderland, slipped to one of their worst performances of the campaign and shipped in five goals, while Chris Rigg grabbed a consolation.

An ’embarrassing’ performance from Sunderland

Mike Dodds deemed the display ‘completely unacceptable’ in his post-match interview, while the team were slammed by fans on social media.

Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley took to X to list the eleven key points that the club should take from their ’embarrassing’ performance.

He wrote: “Sunderland vs Blackburn takeaways: Inconsistency of youth – Need a head coach – Szmodics amazing – Ekwah poor – Roberts struggled – Home fans deserve better – Mid-table fodder – Nowt to play for – Play Rigg every game – Totally unacceptable – Embarrassing…”

A new manager and more Chris Rigg please

Arguably the most important point that we are all aware of is our need for a head coach.

Sunderland confirmed that Dodds would take over until the summer back in February, but he has since looked completely out of his depth and we don’t look like we are going to turn a corner with him at the helm anytime soon.

It is a dilemma though, as to whether we try to bring someone in before the end of the season.

As tough as it is watching this team rapidly decline, we do have nothing to play for and are extremely unlikely to get relegated, even if we do lose all our games.

It seems much more likely that a manager would be up for moving to Wearside at the start of the summer and may give us plenty more options too.

It’s a difficult situation to be in though, and unfortunately it is difficult to trust Kristjaan Speakman in the decision that he eventually makes.

The other important point for the rest of the season is referring to Chris Rigg, who netted his third of the season – which now gives him the lowest minutes per goal ratio in the squad (174 minutes per goal).

The teenager has been one of our best players in recent weeks and will undoubtedly play a key role next season, so why not give him the chance to prepare for regular first team football?
