Scott Brown has thrown his name into the hat for the vacant Sunderland job.
That’s according to the Daily Record, who have reported that the Celtic legend could now be in the running to replace Tony Mowbray.
It has now been almost three days since Sunderland sacked Tony Mowbray, after losing eight of their opening 19 games in the Championship.
The Black Cats are expected to head into this weekend’s meeting with West Brom with caretaker manager Mike Dodds in charge, but they remain heavily in pursuit of a replacement.
A majority of candidates that have been linked with the job have been from abroad, such as Reims’ Will Still and Nice assistant coach Julien Sable.
However, they have also been linked to some British coaches, with Paul Heckingbottom one name that has been thrown around.
That list has now got even longer, with the report claiming Scott Brown is now interested in taking the job on Wearside.
After winning the Scottish Premiership ten times with Celtic, Brown spent a season with Aberdeen before hanging up his boots in May 2022.
The former midfielder then moved into full-time management with League One side Fleetwood Town. He led them to the FA Cup fourth round for the first time in their history, as well as finishing his first full season in 13th place after previously battling relegation.
Brown was sacked by The Cod Army in September after picking up just one point from their opening six games. He was replaced by former Sunderland manager Lee Johnson, with the team now sitting in 21st place.

Sunderland have been made aware of Brown’s interest in the vacant position, though it is unclear whether they will look to interview the 38-year-old.
Scott Brown – yay or nay?
Sunderland have been linked with a number of young, exciting names, but managers like Scott Brown certainly don’t fit into that category.
The Scot did a good job for Fleetwood in his first season, but keeping a rather small club in the third tier of English football is a completely different ask to taking a club like Sunderland up to the Premier League.
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus clearly has his eye on someone abroad, so to now take someone like Brown would be a step backwards, in my opinion.
The only British manager that would interest me is Kieran McKenna, and every Black Cats fan knows there is absolutely no chance that he moves up north from high-flying Ipswich Town.
